Implementation

Implementing the National Agreement

The success of the National Agreement relies on the full implementation of all commitments by all Parties.

The National Agreement commits each government (Commonwealth, states, and territories), the Australian Local Government Association and the Coalition of Peaks to develop, update, and publicly release implementation plans outlining how they will meet their responsibilities under the National Agreement.

  • Shared accountability
All governments share accountability for the implementation of the National Agreement and are jointly accountable for the outcomes and targets under the Agreement.

  • Working together
All governments have committed to working together with the Coalition of Peaks to improve the outcomes in every area of the National Agreement.

  • Development of Implementation Plans
All governments, the Australian Local Government Association, and the Coalition of Peaks will each develop their own Implementation Plans to support the achievement of the National Agreement’s objectives and outcomes.

  • Commitment to supporting the National Agreement
All governments have committed to implementing the National Agreement and aligning relevant policies and programs to the Agreement.

  • Commitment to promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
All governments, the Australian Local Government Association, and the Coalition of Peaks have agreed to demonstrate in their Implementation Plans a commitment to undertake all actions in a way that takes full account of, promotes, and does not diminish in any way, the cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Coalition of Peaks Closing the Gap Implementation Plan

The Coalition of Peaks’ Closing the Gap Implementation Plan has prioritised the need to build understanding of the National Agreement – including it’s advantages to our people, communities, and organisations – so that we can collectively hold governments to account for its implementation.

The Plan:

  • Reflects the roles and responsibilities of the Coalition of Peaks.

  • Was developed and will be delivered by all Coalition of Peaks’ members.

  • Sets out actions to communicate the National Agreement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities, and organisations.

  • Sets out actions to build Closing the Gap policy and program delivery expertise amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities, and organisations.

  • Sets out actions to build understanding and ownership of the National Agreement by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities, and organisations.

  • Includes timeframes for action.
